Size matters

06/20/2011

Did you know that Plus size models start at a minimum of 5’9″ tall and a size 8?!?!

Given that the average American woman is 5’4″ (5’5″) tall and a size 14, doesn’t this seem particularly stupid to you?

It does to me.

I went shopping for shorts this weekend.  We are planning a trip to Vegas this summer and it is going to be HOT!!!!
I realized that for a 6 day trip I only had 2 pairs of shorts and that just won’t do.

I walked in wearing my current shorts — size 10.

I walked out purchasing new shorts — size 16.

I tried on everything from 10, 12, 14 and 16.

I fit in EVERYTHING.

It depended on the manufacturer.

Lee brand — size 16

Gloria Vanderbuilt — size 14

Levi – size 12

Ann Taylor – size 10

Oh…and I couldn’t even squeeze my ass into a pair of Dockers, no matter WHAT the size.   WTF!?!?!

Explain to me, please, HOW this model is considered Plus Size….other than the fact that she is incredibly tall….

And we women wonder why we have such screwed up body images?!?

Ignore the fashion industry.  Ignore the sizing charts.

Wear what fits and what makes you look good.

That is all.

Happy shopping!!!

When I was heavy, I would have to buy stuff at a big and tall mens store. Prices would be 50% higher, minimum. When I lost weight I went down to a slim size. Slim sizes are losing sales, so yep, i still pay 50% more, for less fabric. Go figure.

But I am like you, well, that and being a man as a teeny difference, I buy what is comfy and makes my butt look good. (Men dont have butts, so maybe I need a brazillian butt lift) LOL

It’s no better in the plus size world. Every manufacturer has their own size chart. Lane Bryant used to periodically change their sizing so that the numbers would be smaller, I’m assuming to “make me feel better about myself” – I wear a “smaller” size without having actually lost any weight.

If I purchase clothes that are ‘woven’ (a plain cotton blouse without stretch) versus a ‘knit’ (which does have stretch), I can guarantee I’ll have to go at least one size higher.

Of course, I have the same issue trying to purchase a drink at a drive through. Once upon a time, everybody had standard sizes for small, medium & large drinks. Now, you have no idea how big a “medium” is, because it varies from one place to another.

There are a few companies who use REAL plus size models, but the majority don’t. Plus size clothing manufacturers use “normal” size models because that’s what women have been trained to want to look like, and therefore, if these are plus sized clothes, this is what they *ought* to look like when we put them on. Sometimes I wonder if the companies that use real plus size models have lower sales.

And of course, we go from using a size 8 model as a plus size model (SNORT) to photoshopping size 0 supermodels to make them even skinnier. What the hell is up with THAT?

Oh… the drive thru drinks! I ordered a small and got what I would consider to be a large (32 oz!) I asked the kid at the window to show me a large (out of curiosity) and it was HUGE! Craziness.

And clothes? I gave up looking for sizes a long time ago. If I looked for “my” size, I’d never find anything that fit. I just bite the bullet and try stuff on, much as I hate that.

    Plus-size is 8???? I must be O (for ogre-sized).

You are so right! I hate shopping and when it comes to size it makes everything worst. If that model is a Plus size, then I’m obese, damn it!

stacie — it’s is CRAZY! I still can’t believe that Dockers wouldn’t fit me unless I went up to a 18/20. That’s insane.

Larry — hey..don’t laugh. Butt implants are all the rage! *grin*

Pink – small , medium and large?!? What are those? I only know Tall, Grande, Venti and Trenta. ha..ha.ha…

Sayre — Charles laughs at me when I’m hauling 3 sizes of the same clothing article into the fitting room. But that’s the way it is because you never know what “size” is going to work.

Stinky — Seriously! She doesn’t even have a belly for crying out loud! I don’t know about you but *I* have a belly. Yeesh.

Agreed! There would be so much more beautiful plus size models if they didn’t have the stupid height rule of 5’9″!

Wow, she is looking too hot, even more than any zero figure model.

She’s so pretty. I don’t see how she’s a plus sized model…they should look more like this that what I’ve been seeing.
I hate looking at models these days >_> They looks so gross and unnatural. It’s like their goal is to look as “pretty” as possible, when really, they just….GAWSH…
Every time I look at models or something like that I’m just thinking holy fuck can I have some food now? I’m like 5″ but I’m damn proud of my weight.
